Orillia Lady Kings crown champs as season wraps up

Championship games mark end of house-league action

The clouds parted on Monday night to allow for a perfect sunny evening to wrap up the house-league field lacrosse season in Orillia.

In exciting championship action, the U7 teams battled hard to a tie for the gold medal. Goal scorers for BMO Nesbitt Burns were Ophelia Collins, Zoey Beaudin, Hadley Elliott, Matilda Walker and Camden O’Connor. Assists were marked by Eleanor Damery-Giannunzio and Quinn Laughlin. The Kutting Edge team held them to a tie with goals by Palmer Mainer with three, Audrey Gammon and Kamryn Curtis, who each had two, and Katrina Calabretta and Lucy Gammon with singles. Assists were marked by Annabelle Aguilar Mitchell, Monroe MacIntosh, Rylee Murphy and Blake Bomberry.

In U9 play, the gold-medal game also ended in a tie between the Stoutts RE/MAX and Millwood Logistics. Olivia Hopkins scored the lone goal for the Stoutts RE/MAX team on an assist from Hadley Long, while Harper MacDonell scored for Millwood Logistics on an assist from Isabelle Oulette-Darling.

The bronze-medal game was a battle between 2nd Century Source for Sports and Northern Elite Lacrosse. 2nd Century came out on top in a 5-1 win. Winning goals were scored by Norah Whelan with two, and singles by Isabella Beaudin, Talia Guerrera and Svea Bat. Assists were marked by Delilah Lafraugh, Beya Beaudin and Norah Belviso. Northern Elite fought back with a goal by Kayla Beard on assists by Isla Aguilar Mitchell and Mikayla O’Link.

The U11 championship games were also full of excitement. In the gold-medal game, Tryon Construction were the champs over Champlain Ready Mix with a score of 7-4. Winning goals were scored by Kylie Homan and Rebekah Lacroix with two each, with Abigail Catterall, Leighton Mainer and Violet Whelan netting singles. Champlain Ready Mix goals were scored by Brielle Hodgkinson-Armstrong with two, and Brooklyn Reed and Chloe Crittenden with one goal each.

Atmosphere Electric and St. Louis Bar and Grill kept fans on the edge of their seats for the bronze-medal game in a 3-2 win for Atmosphere Electric. Kinsley Driedger scored two goals for the winning team, and Lila Phillips had one. St. Louis Bar and Grill goals were scored by Isla Quinn and Cara Georgas.

U13/15 teams showed their work ethic with Mariposa Landscaping winning the gold medal over the tough Mid Ontario Disposal team by a score of 8-5. Winning goals were scored by Ellie Lynch, Billie Rouse, Katie Bunting and Anna Fagan, who each scored two. Lily Robbins helped with an assist. Mid Ontario Disposal goals were scored by Rayne Noganosh and Mya Roe with two goals each, and Molly Bergeron with a single. Kyah Thompson helped with an assist.

The bronze-medal game was a fully charged battle that ended in a 4-4 tie between Atmosphere Electric and Strachan and Morris. Atmosphere Electric goals were scored by Kaelyn Drennan with two, Charlotte Cronshaw and Evynn Stanford with a goal apiece. Assists were marked by Elyse Faulkner, Zoey Swaile and Morgan Parnell. Strachan and Morris goals were scored by Ryleigh McGuire and Ava Sage with two each. Olive-Marie Bomberry helped with an assist.

The end of the house-league season also wrapped up with players awards for each team.

Each team’s coaches selected a player from their team to win the selected awards. The Most Improved Player Award went to players who demonstrated vast improvement in their skill and game play this season. The award recipients for this year were Arabella Edwards, Isla Aguilar Mitchell, Riley Grieve, Elise Jermey, Quinn Wilson, Ali Almeida, Eve Mittermayer, Cara Georgas, Hayden Daly, Zoey Swaile, Lily Robbins and Emma Tupling.

The Heart and Hustle Award goes to players who are recognized for their consistent positive spirit and hard work. House-league award winners for 2023 include Isabelle Oulette-Darling, Isabella Beaudin, Emma Jones, Olivia Hopkins, Rebekah Lacroix, Lucy Edwards, Ivy Lowry, Isla Quinn, Emily Taylor, Charlotte Cronshaw, Zoey Gauthier and Kallie Yakely.

The Orillia Lady Kings Coaches Award is given to players to recognize enthusiasm, sportsmanship and a coachable attitude. House-league award recipients for 2023 include Maeve Runk, Delilah LaFraugh, Kayla Beard, Haddie Buchner, Kylie Homan, Brielle Hodgkinson-Armstrong, Vivian Laurin, Sawyer Swaile, Rayne Noganosh, Rylee-Lynn Daly, Anna Fagan and Dylan Nahorney.
