This weekend is a "special" weekend for those with a sweet tooth who would like to support some amazing local athletes.
For the sixth year, Tim Hortons is partnering with Special Olympics Canada to raise money for children and adults with intellectual disabilities to train and compete in an array of sports.
By promoting inclusion and empowerment, the organization creates opportunities for athletes to achieve personal growth and success through the power of sport.
But that requires funding. You can help Orillia's Special Olympians by dropping by a Tim Hortons and purchasing this year's featured treat: a delicious chocolate cake ring donut with white fondant, coloured sprinkles and whipped topping. Officials say 100 per cent of proceeds benefit Special Olympians.
The multi-coloured design was inspired by the themes of diversity and inclusion that are central to the Special Olympics mission, notes a media release from Tim Hortons.
On Saturday, many local Special Olympics athletes got involved by decorating and handing out the donuts at the Tim Hortons located at 298 Memorial Ave.
Sunday is the last day for this unique fundrasier.
"Stop by, enjoy a sweet treat, and help support local athletes as they continue to shine in their sports journeys," said the parent of one of Orillia's Special Olympics athletes. "Your support makes a big difference!"
To date, this exclusive donut has raised nearly $1 million for Special Olympics Canada.
"We're so proud Tim Hortons restaurant owners, team members and guests continue to come together every year to help make sports accessible to everyone through the sale of Special Olympics Donuts," said Axel Schwan, President of Tim Hortons, in a media release.
"Tim Hortons has been an incredible partner to our movement, and their continued support means so much to the more than 42,000 Special Olympics athletes across Canada and their families," Gail Hamamoto, CEO of Special Olympics Canada, said in a media release.
"Every year, I'm inspired by how Canadians rally behind this initiative. The funds raised through the Special Olympics Donut support programs that create life-changing opportunities for athletes with intellectual and developmental disabilities to thrive—not just in sport, but in their everyday lives. This partnership is a reminder of how powerful inclusion can be when communities come together," siad Hamamoto.
