Pair of hat tricks help surging Terriers reign over Kings

Terriers played their first home game at Brian Orser Arena due to equipment failure at Rotary Place and overcame 2-0 deficit en route to 11-4 triumph

The McLean & Dickey Orillia Terriers seem to like their temporary new home.

Playing at Brian Orser Arena due to an equipment breakdown at Rotary Place, the local Jr. C squad crushed the visiting Penetang Kings 11-4 in what was a dominant performance.

But things did not start well for the home side as Carter Wilson scored back-to-back power play goals — within just 34 seconds — to give the Kings a 2-0 lead less than three minutes into the contest.

After that, it was all Terriers. Orillia exploded for six straight first-period goals to take a 6-2 advantage into the second.

In the middle stanza, it was more of the same, as Orillia outscored Penetang 4-1; the two teams exchanged third-period goals.

Josh Brown and Colton Dumond paced the Terriers’ attack as each notched hat tricks. Ty Snelleman potted a pair for the victors, while singles were notched by Devon Edmonds, Kory Lund and Dylan Palomaki. Dumond led all playmakers with three assists.

Reed Spinola stopped 30 of 34 shots to backstop the Terriers victory in a game that saw Orillia out-shoot Penetang 56-34. Each team scored three power-play goals in the chippy affair watched by about 175 fans at Orillia’s Gill Street arena.

With the win, the Terriers improved their Provincial Junior Hockey League record to 5-2 — good enough for fourth place in the eight-team North Carruthers Division.

The Terriers are in Huntsville this afternoon to take on the Otters (4-4). Friday night, the Terriers travel to Midland to battle the Flyers (1-7-1) before returning home to Brian Orser Arena Saturday night for a return bout with the Kings (2-4-1). Game time Saturday night is 7:30 p.m.
