Passionate runners brave chill for Snowflake Series (10 photos)

More than 200 participants, young and old, compete in Canada's oldest winter running series

Runners fueled their passion to keep active over the chilly winter months as they gathered at Couchiching Beach Park Sunday morning for the 26th annual Snowflake Series organized by Rotaract of Orilla.

More than 200 participants, ranging in age from 7 to 84, along with four dogs, braved the below freezing temperatures to run five kilometres through Orillia’s downtown core.

It was the second event of the popular four-race Snowflake Series.

“It can be difficult to keep motivated during the winter, so it’s something for people to look forward to and it’s a great way to keep active,” said organizer and Rotaract committee member Kyle Walters.

The Snowflake Series is the longest running winter running series in Canada. However, a few years ago, the event was in jeopardy of folding due to a shortage of volunteer support.

That’s when Walters and Rotaract Orillia stepped up to the plate.

“I used to run in the series and I absolutely loved it,” he said Sunday morning. “I heard it was going to be put to bed, so I figured rather than run in the race, I’ll take it on and run the event."

Walters efforts are appreciated by participants who have made running in the annual Snowflake Series a tradition; many have participated for over 20 years.

Also thankful for the Snowflake Series are the multiple charities who benefit from the proceeds raised by the participants, including The Sharing Place Food Bank, who have been provided $25,000 over the past five years.

“It’s a great feeling watching this event not only stay alive but grow while continuing to support people and charities in our community who need our help," said Walters.

The next race is slated for New Year’s Day, and registration is still open. You can register on their website
