The fourth and final race in the Snowflake Running Series took place on Sunday morning with a hint of snowflakes falling.

Starting out from the Royal Canadian Legion parking lot, the 5 km race course covered Centennial Drive through Couchiching Park onto Bay Street to Fittons to Maple Drive, before returning to the starting line.

This race was joined by the Kangaroo Training Group, featuring some members wearing their special spring-levered shoes.

Upon conclusion of the race, many of the over 90 participants and their supporters, joined with the organizers and gathered in the Royal Canadian Legion to present the series winners with their medals.

As is the custom after the last race, everyone had a chance to win some prizes donated from local businesses and to enjoy pizza from Wilkie’s Bakery and refreshments provided by the Legion.

While the final tally for the money raised is not yet known, the proceeds raised will be going to three local groups: namely the Lighthouse Health Clinic, the Pediatric Oncology Group Ontario at Soldiers’ Memorial Hospital, and the Sharing Place Food Centre.

Race organizer Michael Taylor from the Orillia Lions Club noted that the scope of runners spanned the gamut from youngsters under five years of age to seniors over 70 and even some runners having their dogs in tow or vice versa.

Plans are already underway for next year which will mark the 30th year for this event and a return to the normal December and January dates.
