The Barrie Arts and Sports Academy, in collaboration with the Mariposa Cricket Club, successfully hosted a free cricket clinic for kids aged six to 12 years at the
West Orillia Sports Complex.

The event, held on Aug. 29, 2024, saw about 15 enthusiastic young players come together to learn and enjoy the fundamentals of cricket.

Cricket enthusiasts in Orillia provided the perfect setting for this engaging introduction to the sport. The clinic featured basic skills drills, mini-games, and interactive sessions. Each child had the opportunity to learn the essentials of batting, bowling, and fielding in a supportive and inclusive environment, making the day both educational and fun.

Reegan Francis, a member of the board of directors at Barrie Arts and Sports Academy, expressed his delight at the turnout.

“We were thrilled to see so many young players in Orillia eager to take up cricket," said Francis. "The energy and enthusiasm from both the kids and their parents were truly inspiring, and it reaffirms our commitment to promoting cricket throughout the region.”

One of the kids, who was introduced to cricket for the first time, shared his excitement: “I really liked the game and I hope that I get more chances to learn more about it. Coaches are great and I enjoyed it a lot.”

This sentiment echoed the enthusiasm felt by many participants throughout the day.

Nithin Liviero, president of Barrie Arts and Sports Academy, also shared his excitement about the success of the event: “The response to our clinics has been overwhelming, and it’s fantastic to see the growing interest in cricket across Simcoe County. Our collaboration with Mariposa Cricket Club has been invaluable in making this clinic a success, and we look forward to continuing our efforts to nurture young talent.”

The Barrie Arts and Sports Academy continues to foster a love for sports and arts within the community.

Following this successful event, the academy will be hosting the inaugural Super League Barrie Cricket League from Aug. 31 to Sept. 15, 2024, in Barrie, providing a competitive platform for local teams.
