Earlier this week, more than 300 wrestlers from 16 elementary schools competed at the 2018 Simcoe County District Wrestling Championships.
Once again, Orillia area schools dominated the event – both in the number of wrestlers and in the number of points those grapplers earned for their teams.
Warminster Elementary School topped the field with 124 points to capture the county title, narrowly edging out local rivals Notre Dame Catholic School, Regent Park Public School and Couchiching Heights Public School.
The all-day event was held this year at Orillia’s Rotary Place. Local teachers Juris Ligers and Tom Earle were the co-organizers; it’s the 15th straight year the dynamic duo have helmed the event, with the assistance of many other coaches, teachers and volunteers.
Earlier in the week, the Orillia City Championship was staged at Rotary Place and that event attracted almost 275 young athletes.
