THE TOWN OF MIDLAND

The Town of Midland has been approved for federal and provincial funding through the Investing in Canada Infrastructure Program (ICIP). In a letter received today from Minister of Transportation Caroline Mulroney, two Town of Midland projects under the Public Transit stream will receive a combined $568,309, in addition to the $36,630 investment announced by Simcoe North MPP Jill Dunlop in August of 2019.
“This funding will go a long way in helping to improve the Mid-Pen Transit Service,” said Mayor Stewart Strathearn. “Not only will this funding help improve the reliability of our service, it will fund new technology for ride scheduling and vehicle tracking. This is some great news for Midland during these difficult times.”
Projects and approved funding:
Project Title: Ride Scheduling and Vehicle Tracking Systems
Federal Contribution: $44,000
Provincial Contribution: $36,630
Project Title: Town of Midland Transit Vehicle Replacement
Federal Contribution: $286,000
Provincial Contribution: $238,309.50
Total Federal Contribution: $330,000
Total Provincial Contribution: $274,939.50
“After the initial announcement last summer, the Town began work on the Ride Scheduling and Vehicle Tracking Systems project,” said Shawn Berriault, Director of Community Services. “This announcement not only allows us to complete that project, it gives us financial assistance towards the purchase of new transit vehicles to help modernize our aging fleet.”
The Transit Vehicle Replacement project will use the ICIP funding towards a new transit bus and two accessible transit vans. Once purchased, the new bus will take approximately a year to be delivered and put in service, while the accessible vans could be received and put in service within 4-6 months. The Ride Scheduling and Vehicle Tracking Systems project is expected to be completed by the summer of 2020.
The Investing in Canada Infrastructure Program is a federal-provincial cost-sharing program which includes up to $30 billion in federal, provincial and other partner funding over 10 years. Ontario’s share per project will be up to 33.33 per cent or about $10.2 billion spread across four streams: 1. Rural and Northern, 2. Public Transit, 3. Green, 4. Community, Culture and Recreation
