It is with sadness that we announce Gilbert’s unexpected passing on Saturday June 19, 2021, at his farm in Oro-Medonte. It was appropriate that Gilbert's life ended on the farm where he spent his entire life! Born October 5th, 1953, he left us on June 19th, 2021, at the young age of 67.

Gilbert was the second youngest of 10 children born to Thelma and Joseph Ayers. Surviving him are his brother’s Andy and Carl, sisters Eleanor Bloom (Stewart), Iris Snow (Ford), and Louise Jackson (Kevin Clark) . He was predeceased by his sisters -- Mary Sears (Robert), Edith Ayers, Linda Banash, and brother Peter Ayers. He will be sadly missed by numerous nieces and nephews, many who have great memories of happy times at the farm.

Gilbert lived a simple life. His 150-acre farm grew some of the best horse hay in the area. He was a cement mason by trade, and a natural born horseman who became a respected rider, trainer, showman and farrier. He loved his horses and all animals --they were his family. He was well-known in the local area for his lifelong skill in turning a young horse into a trusted champion mount.

Gilbert was known to have a great sarcastic sense of humour and was a practical joker. One time he introduced a prize-winning rooster to his friend, Peter Hannan, at 5 in the morning in the confines of an exceedingly small camper while everyone was trying to sleep after a tiring day at a horse show. He was famous for his cowboy breakfast, “a cigarette and a look around!” There was no one who did not like Gilbert.

In the last year of Gilbert’s life, care was provided by long-time horse friend, Tracy Maiden and Kevin Gutjahr. Gilbert was also fortunate to have had many good friends and family members who supported him in his final years. He was especially thankful for the care he received at Soldier’s Memorial Hospital whenever he was admitted for treatment.

Arrangements have been entrusted to Mundell’s Funeral Home, 79 West St., N., Orillia (705) 325-2231. If desired, donations in his memory to Soldier’s Memorial Hospital, Mariposa Hospice, or a charity of your choice would be greatly appreciated.

As per Gilbert’s wishes he will be cremated, and his ashes spread on his beloved farm. Friends and family will be welcomed to a celebration of Gilbert’s life at the farm which will include a trail ride and spreading of Gilbert’s ashes at a later date.

Next year’s hay crop will be the best ever!

“The road to heaven is one hell of a ride” Chris Ledoux
