My name is Sarah Valiquette-Thompson and I am running for your Ward 5, Councillor position in the 2018 election for Severn Township.
I have a sincere and genuine passion for people, local government, community organizations, working together, fresh ideas, community engagement, and being a vocal voice.
I attended Lakehead University in Downtown Orillia and pursued studies in politics 12 years ago after graduating from Police Foundations, Seneca College. Lakehead brought me to this beautiful region full-time after seasonally visiting for 15 + years at our family cottage.
After graduation, my husband (Ian Thompson) and I planted our business roots in Downtown Orillia and we were owners of Era 67 Restaurant for six years and successfully sold our business in 2016. During this time I was elected to the Downtown Orillia Management Board, a member of the Orillia Chamber of Commerce, Victim Services board, coached minor peewee hockey, spearheaded and co-founded a number of community events raising money for various local organizations and regional foundations, and was honoured to be the recipient of the Bill Swinimer Business Leader of the Year Award. I was also successfully elected to my present seat on Orillia City Council in 2014.
My husband and I also own and operate R Cottage Restaurant in the Village of Washago and live in Ward 5, Severn Township, where we are raising our two beautiful children.
I stand for working together, having strong communication and a good working relationship with your representative, neighbourhood safety, appropriate traffic calming measures (EX: Muskoka Street and 169), improved road conditions across our ward, community events and recreational activities, advanced Internet opportunities and fresh ideas for enhancing, beautifying and restoring our beautiful area for today and our future. I look forward to working with you and for you!
