An air ambulance was used to airlift a person who suffered 'life-threatening' injuries in a horrific Highway 12 crash Tuesday evening.

A "serious" two-vehicle crash left occupants trapped inside their burning vehicle Tuesday evening, police say.

The collision occurred on Highway 12 near Concession Road 11 in Ramara Township.

"The initial information was that two vehicles had collided, one was in the ditch on fire (while) the other vehicle was still in the roadway, with occupants trapped inside," said a media release from the Orillia OPP.

"With the assistance of Rama Police Service, Simcoe County paramedics and Ramara Fire, everyone was able to get the occupants out of the vehicle," the media release noted.

Two people were transported to Soldiers' Memorial Hospital in Orillia and one occupant was airlifted to a Toronto area trauma centre with "life-threatening" injuries.

The Central Region Traffic Incident Management Enforcement unit (TIME) attended the location to continue the investigation. The highway was closed for several hours for investigation, however, has since been re-opened.

The investigation is ongoing.

Anyone who may have witnessed or has camera footage of the collision and has not spoken with police is asked to contact the Orillia OPP detachment at 1-888-310-1122.
