Murder charges laid against couple in death of three month old

A three-month-old infant with no vital signs was found at a home in northern Ontario in September of 2022; charges were finally laid this week

Two people have been charged after an infant death in Chamberlain Township, just north of Englehart in September 2022.

On September 3 of that year, at 4 p.m., the Temiskaming OPP responded to a call from the Temiskaming District Emergency Medical Services regarding a three-month-old infant girl with no vital signs at a home on Chamberlain Road 5.

The infant was taken to hospital by EMS and later pronounced deceased. No cause of death was given.

"A thorough investigation was conducted by the Temiskaming OPP Crime Unit under the direction of the OPP Criminal Investigation Branch, with assistance from the OPP North East Region Support Team and OPP Forensic Identification Services, in conjunction with the Office of the Chief Coroner and Ontario Forensic Pathology Service," says an OPP release.

On November 12, 2024, two people were arrested and charged.

Jeffrey Doonan, 32, of King Kirkland, east of Kirkland Lake, is charged with:

  • Second degree murder
  • Criminal negligence causing death
  • Fail to provide the necessaries of life

His wife, Michelle Doonan, 33, also of King Kirkland, is charged with:

  • Criminal negligence causing death
  • Fail to provide necessaries of life

Both remain in custody and are scheduled to appear before the Ontario Court of Justice in Haileybury today.
