Orillia man charged in fatal crash that killed Ramara Township senior

An Orillia man has been charged in connection with a crash that killed a 92-year-old Ramara Township man in June.

Officers with the Orillia detachment of the Ontario Provincial Police responded to a fiery two-vehicle crash on Highway 12 near Concession Road 11 in Ramara Township on June 11.

Initial information at the time was that two vehicles collided, one was in the ditch and on fire and the other vehicle remained on the roadway with the occupants trapped inside.

With help from the Rama Police Service, Simcoe County Paramedics and Ramara Fire, the occupants were helped from the vehicle. Two people were taken to a local area hospital and one was air lifted to a Toronto area trauma centre with serious injuries.

The Central Region Traffic Incident Management Enforcement unit (TIME) continued the investigation and the highway was closed for several hours for investigation..

Two days after the crash, a 92-year-old man from Ramara Township died as a result of injuries suffered in the collision.

In October 2024, Orillia OPP and TIME concluded their investigation.

As a result, Tyson Altvater, 32, of Orillia has been charged with dangerous operation of a vehicle causing death.
