RIDE stop prompts investigation, leads to discovery of loaded gun

A 22-year-old Innisfil man is facing multiple firearms-related charges and having open liquor in his car, say police

South Simcoe Police say a loaded firearm was found to have been stolen in southern Ontario.

On Saturday, November 2, 2024, South Simcoe police officers were conducting a Reduce Impaired Driving Everywhere (RIDE) program on Innisfil Beach Road in Innisfil. During the Ride program, at approximately 1:15 a.m., officers encountered a vehicle containing open liquor. The subsequent investigation led to the discovery of a loaded firearm in the possession of a 22-year-old male from Innisfil. The firearm was found to be stolen from Southern Ontario. 

The individual was arrested and charged with several firearms-related offences, as well as one count of possession of stolen property. He was held for a bail hearing and has been charged with the following offences:

  • Carrying concealed weapon 
  • Unauthorized Possession of Firearm 
  • Knowledge of Unauthorized Possession of Firearm 
  • Possession of Prohibited or Restricted Firearm with Ammunition 
  • Occupant of Motor Vehicle Knowing there was a Firearm 
  • Careless use of Firearm, Weapon, Ammunition 
  • Possession of Property Obtained by crime Under $5,000 
  • Provincial Offence Notice issued for Have Liquor in open container in unauthorized place

“This seizure highlights the importance of proactive policing during programs like RIDE. Removing a loaded, stolen firearm from circulation prevents potential harm and underscores our commitment to community safety," said Chief John Van Dyke. "I'm proud of the dedication and professionalism shown by our officers in the early hours this past Saturday morning,” he said.
