A pair of local drivers are facing impaired driving charges after traffic stops hours apart by Orillia OPP officers on Wednesday.

Around 4:30 p.m., an officer was patrolling in the area of Front Street South when and an alert was received by the Automated Licence Plate Recognition (ALPR) system advising the officer that the driver was suspended.

During the subsequent traffic stop, the officer began an impaired investigation. After the officer issued an approved screening device demand, police say the driver refused to provide a sample.

As a result, Cody MIlls, 34, from Orillia, has been charged with:

  • failure or refusal to comply with demand (CC)
  • driving while under suspension (HTA)
  • possess more than one licence (HTA)

Less than five hours later, at around 9:15 p.m, an officer was on patrol around Victoria Street and Dunlop Street and saw a vehicle stuck in a snowbank.

The officer spoke with the driver to see if they needed help and began an impaired investigation due to the behaviour of the driver.

The officer issued an approved screening device demand, and the driver provided a sample which resulted in a "fail."

The driver was arrested and taken to the Orillia detachment for further testing.

Kelly Newman, 46, from Orillia, has been charged with:

  • operation while impaired - 80 plus (CC)

Both drivers are scheduled to appear before the Ontario Court of Justice in Orillia at a later date.

Their licences have been suspended for 90 days and vehicle impounded for seven days.
