This postcard shows St. Joseph's Convent and Church of the Guardian Angels circa 1920.

Postcard Memories is a weekly series of historic postcard views and photos submitted by Marcel Rousseau.

Some were previously published by the Orillia Museum of Art and History and in the book Postcard Memories Orillia.

At the top of Albert Street, facing south from Penetang Street, is the St. Joseph’s Convent building, built in 1903.

For many years, the Sisters of St. Joseph taught music lessons in this building. The Sisters of St. Joseph also taught at the nearby Guardian Angels School.

Most Catholic students will never forget the discipline and good values imposed by the Sisters, nor will they forget the fun times in the classroom or in the schoolyard when one of the Sisters, clutching her beads close to her long black Habit, would take a turn “skipping” during recess.

The Church of the Guardian Angels is shown with a small cross atop the tower. The tall church spire and lighted cross, a landmark in Orillia, was added in 1927.
