At CrossFit Orillia, the noon hour heralds a special time, not for dining but for a gathering, termed the Legend’s Lunch program, according to owner and trainer Matt Spencer.

“The name is a bit playful with alliteration, but it celebrates our participants who are indeed legends in their own right,” says Spencer, explaining that the program is anything but a typical seniors class.

Spencer emphasizes that challenge is central to their philosophy, regardless of age.

“At CrossFit, whether you’re 26 or 76, the goal is to be challenged appropriately. It’s about feeling the sense of accomplishment and pride that comes with exercise, which transcends mere aesthetics," he explains.

CrossFit Orillia diverges from traditional gym routines that focus primarily on isolated muscle groups, advocating for a more integrated approach that mirrors daily activities.

The best routine is one that challenges individuals while also mimicking the movements they perform daily, which is the core approach at CrossFit Orillia.

Discussions about exercises such as push-ups often focus on their role in targeting chest muscles, which might dissuade some from incorporating them if they aren't interested in working these specific muscles.

“Think about it; you don’t plan your day around the muscles you’ll use to pour coffee in the morning. Similarly, exercises like push-ups and squats are about practical strength—like getting up from the floor or maintaining independence,” he says.

The Legends Lunch program has received positive feedback from its participants, with one member, Jane, sharing her transformation.

“I’m stronger all over. I can lift my granddaughter with ease and feel generally better. The team at CrossFit Orillia tailored the workouts to my capabilities, addressing my concerns about my hip replacement and arthritic knees,” she notes.

Another participant, Leslee, highlighted the program's social benefits.

“Being part of the Legends allows me to live life on my own terms and enjoy a community of friends who support me. It’s more than a fitness program; it’s a social club where we also exercise,” she says.

Spencer also addresses common misconceptions about CrossFit, reassuring that the program caters to a broad spectrum of physical abilities and ages.

“There’s a misconception that CrossFit is only for the hardcore, but our focus is on real health and preventing sickness. Our program is designed to be inclusive, offering guidance and support through every step,” he asserts.
