After 40 years in the business, the team at Housser’s Paint and Wallpaper know how to look after their customers.
“We really do pride ourselves on our customer service, on our ability to help our customers choose what colour they would like, what would go with their new flooring, vanity, etc. It’s that kind of service that shows that we go above and beyond, for our clients,” said Nathan Housser, who with his wife Jennifer, owns the popular local store.
Housser’s was started 40 years ago by Nathan’s dad, James, and his wife Lorna, in a small storefront on Mississaga Street. Four years later, the Houssers moved the store to its present location at 87 Colborne St. West. Since then, an addition to the store has been added, as well as an off-site warehouse.
“I grew up in this business,” said Housser. “I went to school for automotive marketing, but since starting to work here when I was 14, the store and this business was really in my blood. It’s an honour to carry on the family business, I feel a lot of pride about that.”
Back in the 80’s when the store began, a lot of the space was taken up with wallpaper. Over the ensuing years, wallpaper took up less and less room, but now it’s been making a bit of a comeback, according to Housser. ‘We also carry window coverings and blinds, and about one third of our business revolves around those items,” he said.
Housser really enjoys helping people, and says that’s the biggest thrill he gets from his business. “I love how paint transforms homes. Customers come in and they are excited about the transformation and seeing the results. I love seeing that reward for the customer.”
Housser also enjoys helping his community in other ways and seeing the reward in that. “We sponsor a regular Orillia Matters column focussing on different not-for-profits in Orillia, and I am really excited that we get to support those worthy organizations in that way,” he said.
In addition, Housser’s has supported some youth sports teams, Mariposa House Hospice, CFUW/Orillia Homes Sponsorship, and Cornerstone Baptist Church. “It feels good to help your community, and it only helps your community grow stronger,” said Housser.
What’s ahead for this vibrant local business? “To keep serving our customers the best way we know how,” said Housser.
“There aren’t many businesses any more that are second generation businesses. I am proud of that legacy. It’s been a privilege and a fun ride! I am looking forward to the next 40 years of Housser’s Paint and Wallpaper!”
