Bruce Cockburn is shown receiving his Mariposa Hall of Fame award from the festival's president, Pam Carter, on Sunday at what was another excellent festival at Tudhope Park.

I hope everyone had a wonderful Mariposa Folk Festival this past weekend. We really lucked out and missed the patches of rain that appeared elsewhere in the area; the weather was glorious.

The lineup of musicians and other entertainers was fantastic, the artisans’ work was incredible, the food was yummy, and the whole festival ran seamlessly.

The induction of Bruce Cockburn into the Mariposa Hall of Fame was a beautiful, well-thought out and moving affair ... lots of tears, including from Bruce himself, during the tributes to him and the group singing that followed. That was a very special Mariposa moment.

Many hats off to the 800 volunteers who help make the festival, and the festival team of organizers, especially President Pam Carter and Manager Chris Hazel who cheerfully keep things rolling along. It is an amazing event, and we are so lucky to have it here in Orillia.

This weekend and every weekend until Labour Day, Summer Saturday Nights is happening in downtown Orillia. Every Saturday, downtown streets are closed, starting at 5 p.m., and the patios come out for your dining pleasure. Peter Street South is also closed, and there is an art walk from 6 to 9 p.m., featuring art on the street. All galleries are all open until 9 p.m. as well.

Hibernation Arts guest artists this month are Margaret Paradis and Mary Lynne Atkinson.

Peter Street Fine Arts welcomes guest fused glass artist Kate Greenway. Celebrating summer with a profusion of summer flowers, Greenway invites you to her glass garden for the month of July.

From 11 a.m. to 3 p.m. Saturday, Cloud Gallery is pleased to present another Meet the Artist event, featuring artist Angela Lane.

Lane is renowned for her mastery of encaustic art, a technique that involves painting with heated beeswax mixed with coloured pigments. Her intricate and evocative pieces reflect a deep connection to nature and the environment, often incorporating organic materials and textures. Angela will be on sight during this event to answer any questions and educate guests on encaustic artwork.

This Saturday is also the Ramara Classic Car Show, for all those car enthusiasts in our midst. Running from 10 a.m. to 4 p.m. at the Lagoon City Marina, the show will feature tons of classic cars, trophies, a vendors' market, 50/50 draw, raffles, a silent auction, and free public admission. Enjoy!

Also this Saturday, the Orillia and Area Black Community Association presents CommunityFest 2024, at Couchiching Beach Park, from 2 to 7 p.m. This will be an unforgettable day filled with free fun, laughter, and connection.
