VIDEO: Only a few hours left until Justin Trudeau is not prime minister

Tonight on 'Closer Look': As Mark Carney prepares to be sworn as Canada's 24th prime minister, we revisit our recent podcast interview with Trudeau and what he said about life after politics

On his last day as prime minister, Justin Trudeau released a short farewell video to fellow Canadians.

“This may be my last day here in this office, but I will always be boldly and unapologetically Canadian," he said on Thursday. "My only ask is that no matter what the world throws at us, you always be the same.”

Newly elected Liberal Leader Mark Carney will be sworn in tomorrow morning at a ceremony at Rideau Hall.

A lot has changed since last October, when Trudeau sat down for a lengthy interview with our Inside the Village podcast. At that point, he was adamant he would lead his party into a fourth election.

When asked about life after politics — whenever that day came — Trudeau responded with a joke: “I’ve put far less thought to it than many others seem to have made to it."

But Trudeau did talk about some of the things he's most proud of from his tenure as P.M.

“If there's something I learned from my dad's years of service, and the things we reflect back on — multiculturalism, official languages and the Charter of Rights and Freedoms — he did things that shaped the trajectory of the country for decades beyond," Trudeau said. "Everything that I've reflected on, everything that we've done over the past nine years, has been focused on the long-term.”

He specifically mentioned increases to the Canada Child Benefit, expanded dental care, the introduction of $10-a-day daycare, and a strong Canadian economy.

"The best way to manage the economy? Manage Canadians, support Canadians in their success," Trudeau said. "That's what's driving me. That's why I'm doing this job and that's why I'm not really thinking about what I might do afterwards — except spend a lot more time with my kids.”
