Two more Simcoe County deaths attributed to COVID-19

13 more cases confirmed in region including five in Barrie and another five in Innisfil

Simcoe Muskoka District Health Unit is reporting two more residents of Bradford Valley Care Community have now died. 

The latest victims of the virus were two women in their 90s, their cases had been reported by the health unit on April 8. 

In total, six residents have died during the outbreak at the long-term care facility in Bradford. Previously the health unit announced the death of two other women (one in her 80s and one in her 90s) and two men (one in his 80s and one in his 90s). 

There are still 23 residents in isolation at Bradford Valley. Yesterday, medical officer of health Dr. Charles Gardner said many were experiencing severe symptoms. 

There have now been 14 deaths in the region attributed to COVID-19. 

The first was a Barrie man in his 70s who died while at Royal Victoria Regional Health Centre (RVH). Another man, closely related to him and also in his 70s, had been visiting from Alberta and also died at RVH. An Orillia couple (in their 70s and 80s) has died, as well as a Wasaga Beach man in his 70s.

Other victims in the region include a man in his 70s from Springwater, a man in his 70s from Oro-Medonte and a man in his 80s from Muskoka Lakes.  

The health unit is also reporting an additional 13 lab-confirmed cases of COVID-19 in the region including two children under ten (both male) from Bradford. Another male resident in his 90s at Bradford Valley has also been confirmed positive for COVID-19. 

Most of today's new cases come from Barrie and Innisfil. There are five new cases reported in Barrie, including a man in his 60s, a woman in her 40s, and two woman in their 50s. All are cases of community transmission and all are self-isolating.

There is also a man in his 60s from Barrie who has tested positive, but the source of transmission is under investigation. He is self-isolating.

There are five new cases in Innisfil and all are community-acquired but one. A woman in her 60s has been hospitalized for the virus and her case is believed to be related to close contact. 

The other Innisfil cases (all self-isolating) include two men in their 50s, and two women in their 50s. 

The health unit is also reporting a new case in New Tecumseth - a man in his 30s who is self-isolating. 

There have now been 215 cases confirmed in Simcoe-Muskoka region, 104 of those have recovered, and 14 have died. There are 12 people hospitalized and 61 people self-isolating, not including the 23 in isolation at Bradford Valley. 

The case breakdown by community (including those who have died or recovered) is as follows: Bradford W-G (57), Barrie (53), New Tecumseth (21), Orillia (10), Collingwood (8), Innisfil (11), Springwater (5), Midland (5), Wasaga Beach (7), Oro-Medonte (5), Adjala-Tosorontio (6), Clearview (2), Essa (3), Ramara (2), Tiny (2), Penetanguishene (2) for a total of 185 cases in Simcoe County.

There are also 16 confirmed positive cases in Muskoka.

In Simcoe Muskoka the infection rate per 100,000 people is 33.7, the provincial average is 78.9 per 100,000 people.
