The man charged with arson in connection with a massive fire in downtown Orillia on Jan. 21 will return to court Wednesday for a bail hearing.
Brandon Costa, 35, made a brief court appearance on Monday via video, where his case was put over until mid-week.
Costa was charged with arson — disregard for human life a day after the fire but was released on bail. Less than a week later, he was taken back into custody by the Orillia OPP for allegedly breaching his conditions.
According to police, Costa was found in possession of a lighter, a violation of his earlier release conditions.
There were no injuries after fire tore through the downtown Orillia landmark, but the building at the corner of Mississaga and Peter streets was declared a total loss with damage estimated at $4 million. Several businesses within the building were destroyed.
In addition to the original arson charge, Costa, who is from Brampton, also faces two additional charges of breaching his release conditions.
None of the charges against him have been tested in court.
