Fireworks display sends message 'that we can carry on in business-as-usual fashion in the face of climate change,' says letter writer

O Canada! Fireworks were the main event of last year's Canada Day festivities in Couchiching Beach Park.

I am very disappointed that the City of Orillia is having a fireworks display on Saturday.

They have apparently deemed it safe, but it sends the wrong message: that we can carry on in business-as-usual fashion in the face of climate change.

Huge swaths of Canada are on fire and it is affecting us at home as we have had many days of poor air quality due to the smoke (as recently as Wednesday).

Neighbouring municipalities have fire bans in effect. I saw the following sign in Gravenhurst: “No Fires, No Fireworks, No Exceptions.” The City of Orillia should follow suit.
