LETTER: Don't give 'pity points' for poor student performance

Letter writer says teachers should not 'confuse their role as an educator with that of a social worker'

The following letter is in response to a letter about Fraser Institute rankings, published Jan. 23.

Again, I am saddened by yet another teacher who seems to confuse their role as an educator with that of a social worker.

I was raised in the meritocracy of the U.K. educational system, where pity points were not awarded as an excuse for poor performance of the student or teacher.

Perhaps if teachers were paid by results, the “yahbut” culture would be replaced by celebration of excellence.
