Four projects in downtown Orillia were awarded grants today thanks to the City of Orillia’s Downtown Tomorrow Community Improvement Plan (DTCIP) Grant Program.
Mayor Steve Clarke announced the four grants totalling $75,000 in funding as part of the first 2018 intake of the DTCIP Grant Program. The program, now in its second year, includes financial incentives designed to stimulate development in the City’s core.
“Council is making a number of strategic investments in the downtown waterfront area and we want to help small businesses do the same. Working together with our local businesses will result in a stronger, more vibrant downtown that will ultimately attract new residents, visitors and businesses to the area,” said Clarke.
The first four recipients of the 2018 DTCIP Grant Program are:
- 76 Mississaga St. W. - $57,500: Façade improvements and renovations to create four new residential units
- 103 Mississaga St. E. - $5,000: Feasibility and design study grant for architectural drawings to facilitate construction of a second storey renovation above Manticore Books
- 181 Mississaga St. E.- $7,500: Roof and façade improvements including accessibility upgrades to front entrance of Ledgers Orillia
- 62 Albert St. - $5,000: Feasibility and design study grant for a study that will facilitate the addition of one new two-bedroom residential unit within the existing building
“Businesses who have taken part in the program so far have told us that the grant allows them to undertake projects sooner that they could have without a grant,” said Laura Thompson, manager of real estate and commercial development. “As we prepare for the next intake, we encourage those interested to apply by the next deadline, which is April 30, 2018.
There is $125,000 in DTCIP grant funding remaining for 2018. The Economic Development Department will host a DTCIP Community Workshop at the Orillia City Centre in the Tudhope-McIntyre Boardroom at 6 p.m. on Tuesday, March 27, 2018. Attendance at this workshop qualifies as a pre-consultation, which is a mandatory requirement of the application process.
