On March 8, more than 50 participants joined CFUW Orillia at an event to celebrate International Women’s Day. The event titled “Women’s Wellness: Mind, Body and Spirit” featured Dr. Eleanor Gittens, a professor at Georgian College, who discussed how to breathe, cultivate mindfulness, and reduce stress to be more resilient in facing life’s challenges.

Dr. Gittens led an interactive session on stress management, demonstrating effective breathing techniques and introducing the mindfulness “5, 4, 3, 2, 1” method. This method encourages people to focus on five things they can see, four things they can feel, three things they can hear, two things they can smell and one thing they can taste. She also shared insights on the R.A.I.N. approach — Recognize, Allow, Investigate, Nurture — a powerful practice for cultivating mindfulness.

In addition, the event featured a dynamic networking session, where attendees exchanged thoughts on inspirational quotes from influential women, sparking meaningful conversations. Coralee Monaghan of Coralee Monaghan Interiors sponsored the event.

International Women’s Day is celebrated globally each year. It celebrates women’s achievements, raises awareness about discrimination and takes action to forge gender parity.

“International Women’s Day is a time to celebrate progress while acknowledging the work still needed to achieve gender equality,” said Heather Lewis, president of CFUW Orillia. “We were delighted to welcome Dr. Gittens who inspired attendees to take meaningful action towards empowerment.”

CFUW Orillia offers amazing social connections, lifelong learning opportunities, a commitment to advocacy, new friendships, and is dedicated to promoting education.
