Be part of something big and test your endurance by joining the Guardians Half Marathon.

The event, hosted by the OPP at General Headquarters located at 777 Memorial Ave., takes place on Sunday, Oct. 20. It’s a challenge of endurance to those who support inclusion and diversity in sports.

“The OPP has always been very supportive for special Olympics in Ontario,” said Cathy O’Connor, community coordinator, Special Olympics Orillia Council. “This partnership strengthens our bond with them every year and benefits our athletes, too.”

The run is part of the Guardians Endurance Series part of the Law Enforcement Torch Run for Special Olympics. Every year, athletes from Special Olympics Orillia have run the Guardian Half Marathon, which is in its third year now.

“The fact that it is in Orillia is advantageous to Special Olympics Orillia,” said O’Connor.

Funds raised through the run go to Special Olympics Ontario, which gives money to Orillia athletes when they represent the Sunshine City at various tournaments across Canada.

“We have to spend money on getting athletes their uniforms, bussing them to places, and putting them up in other cities,” said O’Connor. “Funds from events like the Guardians (Half Marathon) help cover such costs towards provincial and national tournaments,”

Moreover, she said, it’s a chance for the athletes to come out and interact with others participating in the event.

“It showcases our athletes here in Orillia and it brings attention to them,” said O’Connor. “These athletes are representing our city when they’re playing in tournaments around the province, so we have to come out and support them.”

Just like any other event, the Guardians Half Marathon cannot take place without participants and volunteers, she said.

“We know our community is generous and giving and we’re hoping they will join the run or help out in other ways during the event,” said O’Connor.

For partnerships and general donations to support Special Olympics Orillia athletes, O’Connor can be reached at [email protected] or at 705-238-7277.

“Businesses will receive tax receipts for any donations they make to the organization,” she added. “And they will get the opportunity to put a priceless smile on the faces of our athletes.”

Special Olympics Orillia is a registered charity run by community volunteers with 36 volunteers/coaches, more than100 athletes ranging in age from eight years old to 80, training and participating in 18 core sports.

Every facet of our community is dedicated to enriching the lives of people with intellectual disabilities.
