History buffs and curious minds gathered Sunday at the historic Discovery Harbour in Penetanguishene to take part in the annual Doors Open Ontario event.
“It’s great to see history come alive,” said Simon Shen, a visitor who came with his family to take part in this free event.
Doors Open Ontario is a provincewide program that allows people to experience many historic and significant sites through the summer free of charge.
Located on Georgian Bay, Discovery Harbour showcases local history going back to 1793 and the history of the War of 1812.
“The significance of Discovery Harbour and its connection to the local area, which not too many people know about, is a big part, and we’re glad to showcase it to people all year round, including on the Doors Open Ontario weekend,” said Candice Moreau, manager of marketing and visitor services with Huronia Historical Parks.
“People come from all over Simcoe County to learn our history and view our exhibits like the original 1830s officers’ quarters with period artifacts and replica showcases.”
Many people could be seen taking tours of the authentic 19th-century buildings, walking the same paths as early settlers, and taking a tour of the replica HMS Tecumseth and HMS Bee, with the added opportunity to see the hull of the real HMS Tecumseth that was lifted and preserved from the water of Georgian Bay.
Visitors could also check out the museum and listen to re-enactors demonstrating what life was like when the area was first discovered.
During a group tour of a replica War of 1812 village, someone dressed as a War of 1812 soldier mentioned some interesting facts that surprised the audience.
“Did you know that a tent the size of a Volkswagen Beetle would have to hold 10 individual soldiers and all their gear?” she asked.
Organizers estimated more than 1,000 people visited Sunday, making for “a great day and a great turnout,” Moreau said.
Discovery Harbour is open seven days a week. More information can be found at discoveryharbour.on.ca.
