Increasing temperatures make for tricky trek on Oro-Medonte trail

'We really needed the snowshoes to be able to navigate the trail safely,' says hiking club president

Members of the local Ganaraska Hiking Trail Association had more of a cautious outing Tuesday.

They took to the Oro Tract of the Simcoe County Forest in Oro-Medonte amid increasing temperatures.

“We really needed the snowshoes to be able to navigate the trail safely,” said Orillia club president Carol Strickland.

“Hiking on soft trail in boots at this time of the year is dangerous for that hiker, but it creates a hazard for subsequent users from now until the snow has completely gone. I get that people want to enjoy the forest, but they would enjoy it more safely and less destructively if they would wear snowshoes.”

She said the trail surface is fine for those using crampons on their boots, as long as it is frozen.
