The Board of the Huronia Cultural Campus (HCC), founded in 2015, is pleased to announce that it is re-launching itself under a new name. As of Feb. 1, 2019, the organization will adopt the banner of the Orillia Centre for Arts + Culture.

A complete transition of our website, social media, and print materials to the new name is expected to be finalized by March 1, 2019.

“Our decision to incorporate in 2015 as the Huronia Cultural Campus was based on our vision for re-purposing the Huronia Regional Centre (HRC) property here in Orillia which, at that time, we understood could be made available to our community and to an organization like ours,” commented Board Chair Fred Larsen.

“While re-purposing the HRC site to accommodate our vision of a Banff East remains a primary goal, in 2019 we now see the entire community of Orillia as our home—thus the new focus in our name.”

Over the past four years, with the generous support of public and private donors, HCC has brought great benefits to the Orillia community in the form of art exhibitions, dance performances, literary festivals and music concerts.

In the process, HCC has demonstrated that it can bring its vision to life with a focus on the entire Orillia community and surrounding areas.

“It has also been brought to our attention,” continues Larsen, “that the name ‘Huronia’ is a dated term, referring as it does to the peoples who lived in this area some 400 years ago. To reflect the modernity of what we do, and in the spirit of reconciliation with our Ojibwe neighbours, it feels right to seek a new identity.”

Thus, the Orillia Centre for Arts + Culture is born.

The goal of the Orillia Centre of Arts + Culture is twofold: first, to bring to area audiences artists that demonstrate artistic excellence and innovative approaches to their art form through performances, workshops, and an eclectic variety of programming; and second, to establish ourselves as one of the foremost cultural creative centres in central Canada with a physical presence to focus on a wide range of arts education and the development of original artistic works.

“The Orilia Centre for Arts + Culture will continue to bring amazing artistic experiences to area audiences,” says Larsen.
