To celebrate the 10th anniversary of the World Day for Decent Work, the North Simcoe Muskoka & District Labour Council (NSMDLC), with their partners in the Barrie Labour Council visited MPP offices with chalk in hand Wednesday.
Supporters and passers-by wrote messages reminding those elected officials of the myriad of issues that still need to be addressed as our economy continues to be impacted by COVID-19.
With actions happening at the offices of both Jill Dunlop (Orillia) and Norm Miller (Bracebridge), the Labour Council saw messages about child care, crowded classrooms, and permanent paid sick days, among other issues.
“We are very happy with the positive response," said NSMDLC President Mike De Rose. "Each person has been impacted by this pandemic in a different way. Some people are concerned about our long-term care homes, others are desperate to find affordable and quality child care. Each of these issues requires a progressive and forward-thinking response."
Messages were written in chalk outside of the MPP's offices.
"We're hoping that our government representatives know that their job is to make good decisions for their constituents," said DeRose, who was at Miller's office.
"The choices that they make have a real and significant impact on their communities," he said. "They need to work to rebuild a more fair and just society than we had before. It's a tremendous opportunity, and a tremendous responsibility."
