The Bay Club, a private condominium in downtown Barrie, was ordered to close its whirlpool and indoor spa late last month after a follow-up inspection by Simcoe Muskoka District Health Unit found it had failed to bring several issues into compliance.
A routine inspection on Jan. 22 noted four infractions at the Collier Street building, ranging from failure to ensure the proper alkalinity of the water and failing to ensure the proper pH value of the spas to failing to ensure the proper bromine amount in the water.
A health hazard order was served at the time of the inspection, education was provided, the inspection report was reviewed and the spa was closed, according to the online report.
A follow-up inspection on Jan. 24 noted only one of those issues had been addressed, according to the online report, which noted the remaining three issues were ultimately corrected during the inspection. The health hazard order was rescinded and the facility was approved to reopen.
In south-end Barrie, LA Fitness at Park Place has been cited for eight health and safety violations, ranging from failing to ensure components of the spa were in working order and ensuring the proper alkalinity of the spa water to failing to ensure the premises is properly operated and maintained.
The initial infractions, according to the online report, were a result of a regular inspection on June 6, 2023. The information was updated on the health unit enforcement page Jan. 29.
In the Muskoka area, Holiday Inn Express in Huntsville was ordered to close its swimming pool after a Nov. 27, 2024, health inspection determined the operator was not properly trained in the operation and maintenance, filtration systems, water chemistry and relevant safety and emergency procedures.
According to the online report, an acceptable temporary measure was put in place and the report was reviewed by staff.
The order to close was rescinded on Jan. 27.
