Convicted sex offender Lauriston Maloney and his wife Amber Maloney, who owns and operates Beating The Odds IBI & Child Development Centre in Essa Township, were arrested and charged as part of a human-trafficking investigation on July 19, 2023.

Lauriston Maloney will be home for Christmas.

Sort of. He was granted bail on Thursday at the Barrie Courthouse by Justice of the Peace Douglas Conley under strict house arrest-like conditions.

Maloney, who is currently on trial for human trafficking, was expected to be released later Thursday pending being fitted with an ankle monitor.

He must wear it and be in the presence of his surety at all times. That place of residence is subject to where the surety chooses to reside, rather than a specific location.

Maloney had been charged with breaching his existing release conditions and spent the past two weeks attempting to get bail.

His wife, Amber, who is his co-accused and was re-arrested as well, was granted re-release not long after being taken into custody. A non-contact order between husband and wife, along with a lengthy list of witnesses in the trafficking case, was put into place by Conley.

Exceptions were made providing arrangements for the couple’s children.

His surety and Maloney’s family and other supporters were in court to hear the decision. The group was clearly elated when Conley handed down his decision.

Maloney and his wife return to court on Jan. 3, when it is expected that his trial will resume.

The trial started in late October. The couple were arrested and charged with human trafficking 15 months earlier in relation to the alleged exploitation of a woman who had worked for Amber’s child therapy business as well as being in a personal relationship with the couple.

Lauriston Maloney also faces separate charges of assault and forcible confinement.
