With thoughts of Remembrance Day fresh in everyone’s mind, Mariposa Arts Theatre’s Film Nights is pleased to present The Great Escaper on Wednesday, Nov. 13 at Orillia Galaxy Theatres for two screenings, 4 p.m. and 7 p.m.
The Great Escaper tells the true story of a 90-year-old Second World War Iveteran who “escapes” from his care home to attend the 70th anniversary commemorations of the D-Day landings in Normandy.
Bernie (played by Michael Caine) hesitates to leave his wife (played by Glenda Jackson) because of her fragile health. Bernie himself has been cautioned by the care home staff not to wander far from the facility. But with his wife’s encouragement, he sets off for France on his own. His determination leads to a series of adventures, some humorous and some very poignant. On his return to England, Bernie discovers that he has become a celebrity.
The Great Escaper is a heartfelt, amusing and touching film. It pays homage to the indomitable spirit of the British war generation. It also gives audiences the opportunity to see two megastars of English film in their last roles. After the filming of The Great Escaper, Michael Caine announced his retirement. Glenda Jackson died shortly after completing her role in the film.
Since 1996 MAT’S Film Nights has been bringing outstanding films to Orillia audiences through its connection with the Toronto International Film Festival. The 300 films screened so far have included dramas, comedies, adventures, and documentaries from Canada, the U.S.A., the UK and dozens of countries around the world.
