More questions than answers about new long-term-care beds in Orillia

Neither city nor ministry will confirm location or nature of project, despite province's announcement

Four days after it was announced Orillia will receive 160 new long-term-care beds, details about the new facility remain unknown.

Neither the City of Orillia nor the Ministry of Health and Long-Term Care have confirmed the location of the new facility, called Westmount Lodge, though Simcoe North MPP Jill Dunlop previously told OrilliaMatters she was “assuming” it would be located at the site of the former Mount Slaven Public School on Westmount Drive.

The city has not received an application under the Planning Act for a long-term-care facility, or a facility with the name Westmount Lodge, at that property.

When asked for information about the project, a ministry spokesperson said, “Specific details of the project are not available at this time. The project is currently in the ministry’s review and approval process.”

The spokesperson was then asked why it approved 160 beds for a facility that is still in the review/approval process, and whether that meant there was a chance Orillia would not be getting the new beds, to which he responded, “The ministry will confirm the site of the new home through its licensing review process.”

Calls end emails to the developer have not been returned.
