Nature on full display during local club's hike in Oro-Medonte

'You never know what you will see in the woods,' says club president

A bit of rain didn’t keep members of the Ganaraska Hiking Trail Association’s Orillia club out of the woods Saturday.

While hiking the Ganaraska Trail between lines 12 and 10 in Oro-Medonte, they came across various fungi, as well as an eastern newt near a fallen log.

“To give an idea of how quickly fungi can develop, one of our group had painted a fresh blaze on a tree in May, and in the interim, two shelf fungi established themselves over the blaze, giving the appearance of a candle to light the way,” said club president Carol Strickland. “You never know what you will see in the woods, and it’s good for the soul to take time to appreciate.”
