Nominations for municipal election open May 1

There are a number of changes and new requirements in place for the 2018 municipal election, slated for this fall

The nomination period for the 2018 municipal election opens May 1, 2018 for all candidates wishing to run for Mayor, Councillor or School Board Trustee. Nominations will be accepted at the City of Orillia Clerk’s Department on the 3rd floor of the Orillia City Centre during regular office hours, Monday to Friday (8:30 a.m. to 4:30 p.m.) between May 1, and July 26, 2018 and on July 27, 2018 between 9 a.m. and 2 p.m.

“The City of Orillia is happy to assist all candidates with the filing of their nomination forms,” said Gayle Jackson, Chief Administrative Officer and Clerk of the City of Orillia. “With new requirements for the 2018 municipal election, we recommend all candidates review the Candidate Information Guide on our election website at orillia.ca/election2018 before filing.”

It is important to note that there are a number of changes and new requirements in place for the 2018 Municipal Election, including but not limited to:

  • The nomination of a person for an office on Council must be endorsed by at least 25 persons;
  • Third Party Advertiser registration requirements and restricted period;
  • Maximum amount for parties after Voting Day;
  • New ward boundaries will take effect for the 2018 - 2022 Council term. Nominations will be accepted to fill the following offices:
  • Mayor: One (1) to be elected at large
  • Councillors: Two (2) to be elected for each of the four (4) wards.
  • School Trustees: One (1) to be elected at large for each of the four (4) school boards.
