Ontario reports 485 new COVID cases Wednesday

Today's update also includes 345 recoveries and three deaths

Public Health Ontario reported 485 new COVID cases in today's update (Aug. 18). 

Today's update noted 345 recoveries and three deaths. 

The deaths reported today include one person between 60 and 79 years old, and two people over 79 years old. 

The August 18 update provided by the province's public health agency also reported the following data:

  • 4,067 active, lab-confirmed cases, up from 3,930 yesterday.
  • 174 COVID-positive people are currently hospitalized in Ontario.
  • ICU case data was not available from the province today.
  • 9,641,986 Ontarians have been fully vaccinated
  • The province reported 26,307 tests were processed yesterday, resulting in a 2.5 per cent positivity rate. 
  • There are 11,474 tests still awaiting processing, and the provincial labs have processed 16.8 million tests to date.
  • Of the new cases reported today, 108 are from Toronto, 59 cases are from Peel, 17 are from Simcoe-Muskoka, two are from Grey-Bruce, and 22 are from York Region.
  • Today's cases include 66 individuals under 12 years old, 48 youth between 12 and 19 years old, 238 people between 20 and 39 years old, 99 people between 40 and 59 years old, 27 people between 60 and 79 years old, and 10 people over 79 years old.

Public Health Ontario has confirmed 556,920 cases of COVID-19 since the start of the pandemic, and reported 543,422 recoveries and 9,431 deaths.

The cumulative average incidence rate in the province is 3,779.8 cases per 100,000 people in Ontario.

Ontario's average weekly incidence rate is 21.5 cases per 100,000 people, which is up by 50.3 per cent from the week of Aug. 2.

Simcoe-Muskoka

Yesterday, the Simcoe Muskoka District Health Unit reported 15 new COVID cases.

There are currently 122 active cases in the region. 

There are two people from Simcoe County hospitalized with COVID-19-related illnesses, one is in intensive care. They are in their 60s and 70s and neither was vaccinated against COVID-19.

Since the start of the pandemic, the local health unit has confirmed 12,541 cases of COVID-19 with 12,164 of those cases recovered and 255 cases ending in death.

Last week, the case incidence rate in Simcoe-Muskoka was 17.4 cases per 100,000 people over seven days, which is up by 123 per cent compared to the week of Aug. 2
