Orillia hikers enjoy trek to Singhampton Caves (3 photos)

Trail 'starts off innocently enough ... but then the fun begins with scrambling up a very steep, rocky, forest detritus-strewn 'path' to the caves,' says hiker

Energetic members from the Orillia Club of the Ganaraska Hiking Trail Association went to the Singhampton Caves near Collingwood on Saturday.

The hikers walked along the main Bruce Trail to the Singhampton Side Trail, and the Standing Rock and Caves Side Trail.

"This little beauty starts off innocently enough with a ramble down the steep trail, then rolling through the woods, but then the fun begins with scrambling up a very steep, rocky, forest detritus-strewn 'path' to the caves," explained the club's Carol Strickland.

She noted the caves are "really some spectacular steep crevices" in the limestone rock.

"By the time we got there we were grateful for the cool temperature of at least 10 degrees cooler than the forest above," she said.

Strickland said this is one of those "classic hikes that is worth the hour-long trip from Orillia" to get there, saying those in attendance enjoyed the fun trek.

For more information on the club's hikes, which are in full swing now, see www.ganaraska-hiking-trail.org, and look under the 'Find a hike' tab.

"We welcome all levels of hikers, and the hikes are described on the calendar including their level of difficulty, so that folks can judge whether a particular hike might be to their liking," said Strickland.
