ORILLIA SOLDIERS' MEMORIAL HOSPITAL FOUNDATION

Volunteers are lending more than just a helping hand at Orillia Soldiers’ Memorial Hospital.
They have made a $1,000,000 pledge to the Hospital’s Foundation over the next six years, which will go towards the purchase of a brand new CT scanner.
“On an annual basis, volunteers at OSMH raise around $180,000 through various fundraising initiatives, including operating Dora’s Place Café and the Gift Shop,” said Mark Riczu, Executive Director, OSMH Foundation.
“These add-on activities would not be possible if we didn’t have hundreds of volunteers working throughout the Hospital to make a huge difference in the quality of care we are able to provide our patients, every day.”
In the past two years, volunteer donations have funded the Hospital’s newly renovated Neonatal Intensive Care Unit and nine new Anaesthetic Gas Machines. Now the fundraising focus has turned to a new CT scanner, which comes with a price tag of around $2.2 million.
The current scanner is 13 years old and performs about 13,000 scans per year. A new machine will be better, faster and more precise resulting in lower wait times and lower doses of radiation for all patients.
“Our volunteers’ capacity for giving is truly inspirational,” said Faye Blewett, Manager of Volunteer Services. “The team is eager to honour their million dollar commitment and bring a new CT to OSMH.”
The volunteers will be recognized for their amazing generosity with a naming opportunity at the Hospital.
“This is truly one of the most essential pieces of equipment in our Hospital. To acknowledge the volunteers’ contributions, we will name the CT Suite the Volunteer Resources CT Suite,” said Riczu.
