Terry Fox Week in the City of Orillia ramps up next week and rolls toward run day on Sunday, Sept. 15 with an online auction, a flag raising and the appearance of reminder lawn signs.

Monday’s flag raising and official proclamation at the Orillia Opera House amplifies a week of public and online activities driving toward next weekend’s community run at J.B. Tudhope Memorial Park.

Tuesday morning is the annual Breakfast for Champions, generously provided by Bayside Restaurant for pre-registered members of Terry’s Team — people who have received a cancer diagnosis. An online auction of goods, gift cards and services donated by local businesses and individuals begins Monday through the Terry Fox Run Orillia Facebook page, clicking on ‘Events,’ concluding next Saturday. Winners will be notified and can pick up their prizes at the run site on Sunday, the 15th.

The 2023 Orillia Terry Fox Run generated a record $51,660.20 for cancer research with 317 participants and volunteers, which brought the cumulative total to an impressive $956,583.84.

“Our small but dedicated all-volunteer organizing committee has been building toward this week as we can sense that the cumulative $1 million raised at our community run since 1988 is within reach,” says volunteer run organizer Alison Stoneman.

Starting and finishing a 3.2-kilometre loop at the Celebration Plaza in Tudhope Park, the goal for the 2024 Orillia Terry Fox Run remains $1 per Orillia resident, which has been surpassed for 15 consecutive years. Check-in begins at 11:30 a.m., opening ceremonies and warm-up start at 12:40 p.m. and the run starts at 1 p.m.

Register online in advance run.terryfox.ca/orillia or follow our social media links using the hashtag #NoMatterWhat. Commemorative T-shirts are available in advance at Lake Country Physiotherapy and at the downtown Orillia Farmers’ Market, Saturday, Sept. 7.
