ORILLIA CONCERT BAND

The Orillia Concert Band and the Orillia Big Band, both under the direction of Randy Hoover, are once again joining forces to present a community fundraising concert on Oct. 19 at 7:30 p.m. at St. Paul’s.

And once again, for the benefit of the community of Orillia, these two fine groups of musicians will be putting the “fun” in fundraiser!  This year their efforts go to support The Sharing Place.

The Sharing Place Food Centre, located at 95 Dufferin St. in Orillia, provides food assistance through their Food Bank Program offering a six-day supply of healthy food once a month to families and individuals who identify as food insecure. This non-profit organization sources as much fresh and healthy food as their resources allow, and are dependent upon donations and volunteers to maintain this vital service.

With Thanksgiving on the previous weekend and Christmas ahead, the Concert Band and the Big Band will provide a fabulous evening of great music, while giving the community a wonderful opportunity to bolster the resources for the vital service that The Sharing Place provides.

The Orillia Concert Band kicks things off at 7:30 with an eclectic assortment of pieces including the classics: Weber’s moving Concertino for Clarinet featuring master clarinetist, Kevin Weiss and J.S.Bach’s  Prelude and Fugue in D Minor. The band will also provide more current fare such as Mancini - a medley of his most popular tunes, including The Pink Panther and Peter Gunn. They will also perform Elton John on Tour with Can You Feel the Love Tonight among others. In honour of Halloween, Music for a Darkened Theatre will evoke ghosts, ghoulies and giggles.

The Orillia Big Band, fresh off their Maple Leaf Club dance night, will take over for the second half of the evening, starting with Herbie Hancock’s Chameleon. The Band’s vocalist is the fabulous Milli Schop.

Milli sings regularly in the Orillia/Barrie area. Milli will be performing two popular favourites including the exciting cha cha, Sway. Other jazz tunes presented by the Orillia Big Band include Swinging Shepherd Blues featuring Karen Richards on flute and a trip to Spain, written by Chick Corea with great solos from band members on flugel horn, alto sax and jazz flute.

Orillia is an amazing fount of music, art and theatre and hugely supportive in its enthusiastic help for its residents. This wonderful evening of fun and community spirit takes place at 7:30 pm on October 19th at St. Paul’s Centre.
