Orillia Channel Cats set records, qualify for provincials at recent events

Numerous local swimmers took part in Ontario Age Group Provincials, Barrie Trojan Pentathlon

The Orillia Channel Cats Swim Club recently attended two competitions held the same weekend.

Ontario Age Group Provincials ran from Feb. 27 to March 2 in Toronto and Markham and the Barrie Trojan Pentathlon Feb. 28 to March 2. Age Group Provincials was a qualifying meet, which means that swimmers must achieve the provincial standard in an event in order to attend.

Ontario Age Group meet results: Harrison Levene, 13, set new long-course club records in 13/14 boys 800- and 1,500-metre freestyle and placed 11th in the 400-metre individual medley and 1,500-metre freestyle; Jace Black, 11, qualified for Ontario Swimming Championships in the 50-metre freestyle and placed seventh in the 200-metre backstroke and also raced the 100-metre backstroke; Anna Crawley-Blauel, 11, qualified for Ontario Swimming Championships in the 50-metre freestyle, placing eighth; Ava Fairgrieve, 12, placed 10th in the 200-metre butterfly; Maelle Bouchard, 14, earned personal best times in 50-metre freestyle and 200-metre backstroke; Adair Wieclawek, 16, earned personal best times in 50- and 100-metre freestyle; Sam Pecorella, 15, earned a personal best in the 400-metre individual medley and placed ninth in the 100- and 200-metre backstroke. Mila Sekleski, 11, also competed at Age Groups, racing the 100- and 200-metre butterfly along with teammate Riley Shore, 13, who raced the 50-metre freestyle.

Barrie Trojan Pentathlon meet results: Swimmers who attended the pentathlon meet raced five events in a session. Session 1 (sprint distance) was 50 metres of every stroke and a 100-metre individual medley, and Session 2 (middle distance) was 100 metres of every stroke and a 200-metre individual medley. The swimmers’ total times were added together to see who had the lowest total in each age category.

Thirteen-year-olds: Riley Shore was first for both the sprint and middle-distance pentathlon; Isabella Brown was fourth; Cohen Greer was eighth in the sprint pentathlon.

Fourteen-year-olds: Kael Cresanto was first for both sprint and middle-distance pentathlon; Nadine Ackert made the Ontario Age Group standard in the 100-metre backstroke and just missed the Ontario Swimming Championships standard.

Fifteen-year-olds: Sophia Brown was fifth in the sprint and 10th in the middle-distance pentathlon.

Ten and under: Margot Cameron was seventh in the middle distance; Lilly Edgerton was in the 11th middle distance.

Eleven-year-olds: Cheyanne Hawrysio was seventh in the middle distance.

Twelve-year-olds: Georgia Cameron was first in the middle distance; Emma Edgerton was sixth in the middle distance; Caden Stuart was ninth in the middle distance.

Swimmers who attended the pentathlon include Nadine Ackert, Isabella Brown, Sophia Brown, Georgia Cameron, Margot Cameron, Alivia Cavanagh, Kael Cresanto, Emma Edgerton, Lilly Edgerton, Cohen Greer, Josephine Hare, Cheyanne Hawrysio, Katie Heckendron, Grace Hunter, Zoe Leboeuf, Henry MacDonald, Riley Shore, Sofiyca Slade, Simone Smith, Caden Stuart, Carmen Conroy and Charlie Timms.
