This past week featured another sunny day for tennis as your Orillia Tennis Club hosted the Bracebridge Tennis Club for Round 2 of the Summer Slam in Simcoe Interclub Tennis Tournament.

We want to thank those who came out to watch an exciting four-court contest. Orillia dropped the first event in Bracebridge earlier in June and faced the potential of going down 2-0 entering into this week’s play. Early on it didn’t look good for your home team dropping the first match on Court 1. Would Bracebridge leave with a commanding lead going into the summer or would your Orillia Tennis Club rally?

Court 1: Gary Mizzi and Paul Wallis from Orillia lost to Ken and Jim from Bracebridge. The first set was very close. Bracebridge won it seven games to six in an 8-6 tie break. In the second set the home team battled hard but after losing a tough tie break, they lost the second set 6-1, giving Bracebridge a 1-0 match lead.

Court 2: Debbie and Nathan Hele from Orillia defeated two new members from Bracebridge, Violeta and Johnathon. Orillia started out very strong with a six-game-to-one win in the first set. They carried that momentum into the second set and won it six games to three. This tied the event at one match each.

With the match tied it would take courts 3 and 4 to decide this pivotal second round of competition between the two clubs.

Court 3: Longtime partners Ken Brownlee and Kevin Smith from Orillia were up against Don and David from Bracebridge. The home team from Orillia won both sets with identical scores of six games to two. Their familiarity as a team made a huge difference for the home team.

Court 4: Linda Alm and Vanessa Nguyen from Orillia started out very strong against Jennifer and Sue from Bracebrdge. They won the first set six games to one and the second set six games to zero, for a very convincing victory and clinching the overall match for Orillia.

In the end, the home team rallied after losing on Court 1 to win the other three courts and win the day three matches to one. This ties up the series at one each after Bracebridge won the first one at home. Thank you to club president Kevin Smith for filing this court report.

The next scheduled match between these two clubs is Wednesday, July 10 in Bracebridge.
