On May 24, the Paperweight Kings travelled to the Six Nations Confederacy Challenge Tournament in Brantford.
It’s a tournament that honours the game of lacrosse and teaches young people to respect themselves, teammates, opponents and the game itself. The Orillia team did just that, as it was a first-time experience for many of the players on the team.
On Friday night, the Paperweights faced off against the Pelham Raiders and came away with a strong 14-1 win. Contributing to the win were Holden Spurgeon, Levon Hayes (3), Preston Grimoldby (4), Hartley Russell, Ben Anderson (2), Tyson Hawke, Ben Almeida, and Jaxson Snider. There was a strong performance from Kash Cosco in the net.
Saturday morning brought a stronger team up against the Kings, but once again, through teamwork, great defence and a renewed level of energy, the Paperweights came out on top against the Orangeville Northmen 12-6. Goals went to Hartley Russell, Keldon Campbell (4), Ben Anderson (6), and Levon Hayes.
The team from Wallaceburg took the Saturday afternoon game from the Kings with a score of 11-4 for the Red Devils. The Kings played hard, made some good passes and worked together well. Goals were scored by Ben Anderson (3) and Ethan Viherjoki. Assists for this game were awarded to Ben Anderson and Brock Caven. Jacob Bat worked tremendously hard in net and never gave up.
The final game on Sunday was against the Hamilton Bengals and the Kings emerged victorious after several moments of the game being tied. The final score was 10-7. Contributions to the score were made by Ben Anderson (4), Preston Grimoldby, Levon Hayes (3) and Keldon Campbell (2). Devin Russell was strong during faceoffs and never backed down from a challenge. A very strong showing from Kash Cosco once again in net.
Coaches Andrew Hawke, Brock Robertson, Zach Morris and Daryl Bat were impressed by the levels of improvement that the team made over the three-day tournament.
Each player worked hard, came together to help out their team and had a lot of fun. The team is looking forward to their next tournament, which is scheduled in June in Orillia.
