The Orillia Kings girls peewee box lacrosse team continued their strong season, compiling a 2-1-1 record at a weekend tournament in Kitchener-Waterloo, narrowly missing the gold-medal game by a single point.
The local girls, coached by Dave Farr, got off to a rocky start when they suffered a 9-0 setback against the Peterborough Lakers - last year’s provincial champs.
The score did not reflect how tightly contested this game was. Goalie Sara Pond was the star in this game, making many brilliant saves.
In Game 2 Saturday morning, the Kings hit their stride, notching a 6-1 win over local rivals Barrie Bombers. Willow Davidson scored twice for the victors, while Sophia Kring, Kady Shelswell and Shelly Ramos tallied singles. For Ramos, it was her first ever goal.
Game 3 was a tight-checking affair against the always strong Whitby Warriors. This was a back and forth game that could have gone either way.
Again goalie Sara Pond was the star in this game making many timely saves and stopping the main Whitby threat on a breakaway in the last minute of the third. Both teams had their chances. In the end, the game ended in a 3-3 draw. Kings goals were scored by Willow Davidson, Kady Shelswell and Sedona Recollet.
In Game 4 against the short-staffed Norfolk Timberwolves, the Kings jumped out to a big lead en route to a 9-1 victory. You never like to run up the score but goals scored were used as a tie breaker. Starring in this game were Sierra Tryon (3g, 2a) and Willow Davidson (2g, 1a). Single goals went to Shelly Ramos, Kady Shelswell, Alia Martin and Sienna, who notched her first career goal.
Despite the lopsided win, Orillia missed out on the finals by one point.
Orillia improved its record to 6-1-1 on the season.
