Barrie police are investigating an "unsanctioned car gathering" that happened Tuesday night in a local plaza parking lot.

City police say the incident occurred between 9:50 and 11:50 p.m. on Tuesday, Sept. 3 at Grove Street East and Johnson Street.

The information was given to police that evening and the following day when a "concerned" community member filed an online report.

"The citizen identified that the participants engaged in activities that included the high revving of motor vehicle engines, burnouts and disorderly activity that resulted in large amounts of smoke and a strong odour of burnt rubber polluting the normally quiet night air," police stated in a news release.

The complaint also noted motorists travelling at "very high rates of speed" on Grove Street East.

"These unauthorized events often result in damage done to parking lot surfaces and if police are unaware of what is taking place, opportunities to provide enforcement and education cannot easily take place after the fact," police stated in a release.

Legislation that includes the Criminal Code, Highway Traffic Act, Trespass to Property Act, as well as other provincial statutes are available to police and can be used to quickly bring an end to what is unacceptable behaviour on our streets and public property, police say.

Barrie police urge the community to call 705-725-7025 if they are aware of or come across what appears to be an unsanctioned car or truck gathering.

"A call for service will allow for police resources to respond accordingly and professionally deal with the situation before it has the opportunity to become unruly," police said in the release.

A similar truck rally also caught the attention of local police on Aug. 25 at Park Place in the city's south end.
