ESSA TWP. — A Scarborough man has been charged with impaired driving after provincial police say a vehicle nearly struck an OPP cruiser early Sunday morning.

Shortly before 4 a.m. on Dec. 8, Nottawasaga OPP says an officer was conducting general patrols southbound on County Road 27 when a northbound passenger vehicle "suddenly crossed over the lane" toward the officer's vehicle.

Police say the officer continued to follow the vehicle for a moment, allegedly observing speeds to be 60 kilometres per hour in a posted 80-km/h zone.

"The vehicle continued to cross over the centre lane into live traffic," police stated in a release.

The officer conducted a traffic stop.

Christian Valiant, 28, of Scarborough, has been charged with adult operation of a motor vehicle while impaired (alcohol and drugs) and operation while impaired (blood-drug concentration 80 plus).

None of the allegations have been tested in court.

In addition to the charges, the driver was issued a 90-day licence suspension and the vehicle was impounded for seven days.

The accused is scheduled to appear at the Ontario Court of Justice located in Bradford on Jan. 9, 2025, to answer to the charges.
