While police have not formally identified the suspect involved in the shooting incident that killed two South Simcoe Police officers on Tuesday night, several reports have identified him as Chris Doncaster.
Doncaster lived in the home on Somers Boulevard with his grandparents. Residents of the area expressed their shock over the incident on Wednesday morning as the SIU was on the scene investigating.
A source close to the family said the young man was troubled.
Doncaster was pronounced dead at the scene after a shooting inside the Alcona home Tuesday night at around 8 p.m. The SIU said police were called by a family member inside the home.
The wounded officers were rushed to a local hospital by emergency run where one of them died. The second officer was airlifted to a Toronto trauma centre and succumbed to his injuries early Wednesday morning.
An autopsy for Doncaster is scheduled for Friday.
Interim South Simcoe Police Chief John Van Dyke identified the two officers at a press conference yesterday as constables Devon Northrup and Morgan Russell.
“Words cannot describe our grief,” said Van Dyke. “Our immediate focus is to support our members and their grieving families."
Over the past 24 hours, there has been an outpouring of messages of condolences for the slain officers from across the country, including Prime Minister Justin Trudeau. Yesterday Premier Doug Ford and York-Simcoe MPP were at the Innisfil police station to give their condolences.
The SIU’s forensic team is continuing their investigation today.
