Man arrested for causing disturbance on downtown roof

A man has been charged with mischief and causing disturbance following downtown incident, said OPP official

A man has been arrested after knocking bricks and debris down onto Mississaga Street East from atop a downtown Orillia building.

At 3:45 p.m., Orillia OPP responded to a call about a male on a downtown Orillia roof, and blocked off a section of Mississaga Street East and Matchedash Street South while police and the Orillia Fire Department worked to get him down over the course of an hour.

OPP officers managed to get onto the roof and calm the man down, said OPP Const. Brett Boniface, before firefighters used a bucket truck to lower him to safety as bystanders looked on.

“The male party was located on the roof by police, who were assisted by EMS and Orillia Fire services to get the male off the roof and secure him,” Boniface said. “Officers were able to subdue him out there and get them calm.”

Boniface said the OPP generally does not venture onto rooftops, but they were able to access a lower level of the downtown roof to secure the suspect.

It’s suspected the man was under the influence, Boniface said, also confirming bricks and debris were knocked down while the man was on the roof.

“There were some small bricks and pebbles that did fall,” he said. “We are investigating that at this time.”

Boniface said the man has been charged with mischief and causing disturbance, and transported to the Orillia OPP detachment.
